assessment.jpgAs teachers, we are often having to design our own assessments, or alter existing ones. An effective assessment tool for reading comprehension is a Cloze Procedure activity. Although I would not use this type of assessment until late in the year in my ELL Kindergarten class, it is appropriate for other grade levels all year long. Below is an example of a Cloze Procedure. Students should read the passage and insert the missing words. Use the table at the end to record the words they insert.

I chose to use the book The Dog Who Cried “Woof”. This book is a Big Red Reader from Scholastic. It is based on the scholastic book series Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell. This book was adapted by Bob Barkly and illustrated by John Kurtz. The reading level of the book is 2.1, or beginning of 2nd Grade. It could be used with a higher level First Grader, or lower level Third Grader, as well.
